Protesters at Chinese Consulate in San Francisco Urge Support of SJR 10

Senator Joel Anderson and Falun Dafa practitioners gather at the consulate to condemn the Chinese government’s interference with his human rights resolution

Today, over one hundred gathered at the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco to condemn the Chinese government’s interference with California Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 10 authored by Senator Joel Anderson (R-El Cajon).

Last Friday, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in San Francisco sent a letter to legislators of California warning them not to support Anderson’s SJR 10 or else risk the relationship between the two governments.

SJR 10 condemns the Chinese Government’s human rights violations against Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) practitioners and was referred to Senate Rules Committee at Senate Pro Tem Kevin De Leon’s request despite receiving bi-partisan support in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The procedure has been used to shelve measures from the minority party in the past so that they do not receive a vote on the Senate floor.

Anderson said, “I’m proud today to stand with peaceful freedom fighters to show the Chinese Communist Party we will not be silenced by their gestapo tactics. As Americans we cannot stand idly by while other countries perform genocide based on religious belief, and I will continue to use my voice in the Senate to ensure the persecuted get justice.”

Falun Dafa teaches truth, compassion, and forbearance that strengthens the physical and mental health through meditation. Due to fear of losing ideological control of Falun Dafa practitioners, the Communist government banned the practice in 1999 and Falun Dafa practitioners have since been subjects of persecution. Compelling evidence exists that Falun Dafa prisoners of conscience have been the source of the dramatic increase of organs for transplantation in China.

San Francisco Falun Dafa Practitioners shared in a statement, “[…] As the Consulate had done in the past, the letter was full of defamation about Falun Gong and threatened that the diplomatic and economic relationships between California and China could be harmed.

“For the past 18 years, the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco has routinely pressured U.S. elected officials, local community leaders, business owners, and various organizations to not support practitioners of the peaceful Chinese meditation discipline, Falun Gong. […]

“We as Americans will not allow a communist regime to undermine the fundamental values America is built upon. We call on all those who have received threats from the Chinese Consulate General either now or in the past to stand up against the regime. The Chinese communist regime rules its people by fear, and we Americans will not let them violate our basic rights with their fear tactics. […]”

Resolution co-author Assemblyman Randy Voepel (R-Santee), who Anderson referred to as “a strong champion of freedom around the world,” sent this statement: “Falun Gong/Falun Dafa at its core is peace. Through the efforts of SJR 10 (Anderson), we are doing all that we can to protect those who seek to practice peace, tolerance, and compassion and urge the Chinese government to reflect upon its own actions and recognize the undeniable abuse they continue to practice upon their people. California stands for justice and we will not tolerate those who attempt to deprive anyone of that right.”
