Anderson Recognizes Nearly 200 Volunteers Sorting Donated Clothes for Young Military Families

Saturday, April 14th marked the 17th “Heroes Day” celebrated by Bridgepoint Education. On this year’s Heroes Day, employees and students from Bridgepoint Education and their academic institution, Ashford University, sorted donated clothes for the Support the Enlisted Project (STEP). STEP is a program dedicated to supporting young military members and their families in need and helping them build towards self-sufficiency. In support of the event, State Senator Joel Anderson was in attendance Saturday and thanked all the volunteers for their work and generosity on Heroes Day.

Celebrating National Volunteer Month, nearly 200 people from Bridgepoint Education and Ashford University came together to process and sort clothes that were collected at a clothing donation drive prior to Heroes Day. The clothes will help many junior active-duty enlisted service members and their families all across Southern California. The event was held at WD-40’s headquarters in San Diego.

Anderson recognized Ashford University’s President and CEO Dr. Craig Swenson, Bridgepoint Education’s Founder, CEO and President Andrew Clark, and Bridgepoint Education’s Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility Jennifer Love-Bruce, for their years of work dedicated to supporting their community.

“We appreciate Bridgepoint and Ashford volunteers spending their Saturday morning supporting our military families,” said Anderson. He added, “STEP provides much needed services for military families throughout Southern California, and volunteers like those at the Heroes Day event help make it all possible.”

Tony Teravainen, STEP’s CEO and co-founder, acknowledged the collaboration between Bridgepoint, Ashford and their volunteers on Heroes Day by stating, “Community partnerships like this have enabled STEP's programs to be impactful in changing young military family lives. We are grateful to Bridgepoint Education for being a generous partner for three years — giving back to our military community who are making daily sacrifices on our behalf.”

Clark explained the impact of the event and importance of the organization by stating, “Heroes Day is a great opportunity for Bridgepoint employees and their families to make a difference in the community. I am proud of our generous employees and the positive impact our organization continues to have in the communities we serve.”

Volunteers sorted donated items into 250 boxes, each with approximately 100 items inside, for a total of about 25,000 items sorted and prepared for use by military families in need.
