Frank: I’d retired from a state government agency job after 35 years of service, and I was going into three months of not having my retirement funded back to me yet and I was living off my savings. I had no luck for probably six weeks of trying to call CalPERS.
Text: The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) is a state agency that provides retirement and health benefits to government employees. It serves approximately 1.7 million members.
Sen. Anderson: Once Frank realized that the agency wasn’t going to help him, he decided to call me. I only wish he had called me sooner.
Text: Senator Anderson immediately requested that CalPERS call Frank and give him the personal attention he needed in order to get the pension he earned.
Frank: I was pretty stunned that something would work that fast in government today because a lot of people don’t have a lot of trust in government. It’s slow, it’s bureaucratic. The fact that something happened in less than 48 hours… That’s all I really wanted at that point is, please somebody tell me when is this going to start and why is, why is this happening to me?
Frank: When it comes down to serving the constituents, I think that somebody like Joel serves everybody equally regardless of what your problem is. If all government even functioned half as good as this place does, we wouldn‘t be having the problems, the mistrust of government and agencies after right now. I don’t think a lot of people know that a resource like this exists, they just don’t.
